Clean out your closet for cash. Look through your closet and decide which garments you don’t regularly wear or are ready to part with. Then call local consignment shops and get a feel for what each store is taking in at the moment. If you have time, visit the shop and look at the brands and styles typically sold there.

Start the year off right by tracking your tax-related expenses in 2016 in real time and in an organized way, not during an April scramble to dig receipts out of junk drawers. Little-known expenses to track for your federal return can include commuting between two jobs, certain moving expenses, expenses related to volunteer work; even state and local sales taxes paid throughout the year if that's bigger than your state and local income taxes. (You can't claim both.) Imagine how great you will feel during tax time the following year!
